Platinum Award at TLR-Esports

TLR Esports : 06-14-2012

The Trooper case was an outstanding product to test and work with. There is a tonne of room available to fit as many components as a serious gaming rig needs. During game play giving the fans that extra boost really did help with the performance. From the figures alone the temperatures could be lowered a few degrees within minutes of pressing a few clicks on the front panel. As for styling and finishing this case truly is top end. It has magnificent features along with a look that could belong in Ton Starks living room. The CM Storm Trooper was faultless and anyone hesitant on buying should forget all their worries and purchase straight away. TLR award this a HUGE 10/10 and a very well deserved score. The future of CM Storm cases is something we will definitely be keeping our eye on.

Gold Award at Overclockerstech

Overclockerstech : 01-04-2012

One could say that Overclockers Tech really appreciate this case, it has very few faults, with the case handle issue being the only one and that it really does support two radiators. The installation of the second (lower)radiator was simply a breeze. Going back to the top radiator issue, we believe this can easily be resolved by using nuts and bolts for the handle rather than rivets and a new revision can address this issue.

However looking at the overall picture of the CoolerMaster Storm Trooper then we get an inkling of what the product is all about and its evil looks. Forget the wimpy Sith-Lord this case whispers in our ears of dark dreams of seduction and power. It tantalises our senses with its eerie glow and promises a dark prophecy. With the risk of sounding like a ‘marketing stooge’ we would say that if this chassis were a Megalomaniac, then it would be James Bond Uber-villian but one that is not stupid enough to explain all his plans no matter how close he thinks he is to winning. If the product were a Science Fiction film then it would be the first two ‘Alien’ movies waiting to hug the face of any unsuspecting water cooling enthusiast. Finally if one were to compare this chassis to a horror film then it would be the first Amityville movie where the blank-dank walls bleed to death  and the eye-like windows seep into your soul.

It is fair to say (and as we mentioned at the start of the review) we have become quite jaded about so-called ‘water cooling ready’ cases, however this one with its price range of £136 Sterling has lived up to the name as an  ’exceptional product’

It is good to see a company that is FINALLY listening to us Water Cooling Enthusiasts and are offering us products we can actually use!

An inspired design with an orchestra of ideas for the water cooling enthusiast, all brought together into a pure symphony of evil.

Editors Choice at eTeknix

eTeknix : 11-24-2011

With cases of the past from Cooler Master, you know that before you open the box, the case will yield a high level of feel and build quality.  This is certainly no-exception here and the case is solid and easy to handle even though its much larger than the majority of cases we see come through our hands.

The number of features included and installation options that are available is just staggering. For starters, we got what is pretty much the standard with cases in that there is the usual USB and audio jacks on the front I/O panel along with an eSATA port, and a cable management solution inside.  Where the Storm Trooper exceeds this is with the built in fan controller, USB 3.0 support, the lovely carry grab handle, cable security panel on the rear of the case, internal parts/ accessory tray, huge expanse of space inside for fitting hard drives / optical drives/ SSDs and any 5.25? accessory with space to spare on the front panel.  The option to rotate the hard drive cages and /or remove them entirely is a great feature (albeit not a new concept from Cooler Master). Normally a case like this would be bordering near or above the £200 price mark, but at a mere £139.16 the deal just got a lot sweeter, considering how many other cases of this price can offer this much and more without reducing the quality and feel to them?

As with any case and any product we get in for that matter, I always try put my self in the shoes of the person that is looking for a product of this type and ask myself; “Would I buy this myself?”  The Trooper has a very clear answer to this question, yes.  The Trooper has entered into a market where on the extreme end of the scale, the competition can be quite fierce, but this is nothing like that, its entered in a position where it is directly taking on cases on the next level down, and by doing this I wouldn’t be surprised to see it sell out very quickly as everyone goes out to grab a huge bargain.

Even though I did point out a couple of niggles through the review, like most things these are a mere petty point.  If I was to go out and buy one of these for myself, I would not mark the case down for those reasons and I’m sure that given a little more time and careful planning, I could have worked my way around these. I asked right at the beginning if the Strom Trooper would be running at the front line or whether it would be left behind with everyone else, however it is very clear from its striking yet simple design, the huge amount of space for drive fitment, and included extras such as the X-Dock that the Trooper is way out ahead in the lead and the Cooler Master Storm series has firmly made its mark in the case department.

Gold Award at Overclock3D

Overclock3D : 11-23-2011

Its epic, End.

If only it was that easy! Lets try and start from the top then, the handle on the roof of the case is not only very sturdy and secure but it also has a nice rubbery feel top with soft rubber fins somewhat similar to a mountain bike handle bar grip underneath so that its much more comfortable when carrying your rig around. The I/O panel is a work of art to be honest with you, the first thing that catches your eye is the large power button that lights up red with the CM Storm logo. Below that there is the fan controller which bleeps as you press the buttons to increase or decrease the speed but this is also backed up with lights to indicate what speed you have the fans set to out of a possible 6 options. Other things to point out are 2 USB3 ports, 2 USB2 and a tidy button to disable the LEDS in the two from fans that come with the case which will please those of you out there that sleep with your PC on..... Prefer pyjama's myself.

The front of the case has a total of 9 optical bays, 6 of which are consumed by the 4 in 3 hard drive cages, these cages are also able to have the fans run across the front of the case or have them pulling air in from the very front of the case which is a very nice touch. Talking of hard drives there is a dedicated 2.5" hard drive mount for a total of 4 drives should you need it, if like us you don't like the look of it then its just 4 screws to remove it!

Yet more features showing you CM Storm mean business with this case is shown with the 9 total PCI slots at the back of the case meaning that even monster boards like the Gigabyte G1 Assassin, meaning multiple GPU configurations are easy peasey.

Another feature any LAN gamer or for that matter anyone that wants to hide something 'valuable' will love is the concealed drawer in the front of the case that is lockable so you can not remove it or have access to it from the inside either. Its practically a hidden safe deposit box! Perfect for putting your phone, wallet, MP3 player or any other valuable contraband and being able to lock it away out of sight.

Right heat sinks, it will gobble everything thanks to the 140mm rear exhaust fan giving the case some extra girth but this wouldn't be one of my reviews if I did not mention water cooling... Its got 2 grommets at the top of the back panel should you wish to use some kind of external solution. The top of the case has support for 2x 120mm and 2x 140mm fans, both of these will support radiators up to 60mm thickness if you install the fans on the outside of the case (underneath the top panel). Going on from this it also means you would be able to fit a Corsair H100 in a push pull config, radiator and one set of fans inside then the second set on the outside underneath the top panel. The top panel may take some time to remove as the handle is integrated but it can be done should you have the time and patience to do it.

Going on from the top of the case it is also possible to fit a 240mm radiator in the floor of the case towards the front, its not officially support but you could easily bolt in a 50mm thick 240mm radiator. If you got your tools out and cut a blow hole or trimmed the case a bit you could fit a 60mm rad with fans down there if you were prepared to move the hard drive cages up so it could breathe. Talking of the hard drive cages if you remove those all together you could fit a 360mm radiator in the front of the case if you got handy making some mounts. So in total that's 2x 240mm radiators AND a 360mm radiator all possible should you be willing to put a bit of effort in? Now you might understand why this case is epic!

Without a doubt this is the best CM Storm case to date, but in the right hands this could be the best case to EVER be released from Cooler Master as a whole. Big words for a case that delivers big. I love it, we love it, you will love it. All the other case manufacturers stand up and take note. This is how its done, and that's why we have bestowed the case with nothing short of the OC3D Gold award, if there was ever a case that has made me think gold was not quite worthy... Its this.

Awesome.

Gold Award at Hardware Heaven

Hardware Heaven : 11-22-2011

There was a time, not that long ago, where case prices were rather high and to get a decent enthusiast case a consumer had to pay a lot of money. In fact for some cases, such as those from Lian Li we still need to pay well over £400/$500 for high spec models. This makes the Trooper all the more impressive as it packs a great build quality and stylish industrial design into the sub $190/£140 price bracket.

CM Storm haven't managed this by cutting corners though as we were more than happy to see that the case feels solid, the paintwork perfect and the overall construction completed to a high standard. The design also impresses as it allows for a huge amount of flexibility with large CPU coolers, graphics cards and motherboards all supported... and that's before we consider water-cooling, 13 SSDs (or 8 HD's ) and support for eight fans, four of them provided by CM Storm.

The features don't stop there though as we also get the great handle on top, external hot swap bay on the front, significant dust filters and a cable security bracket at the back.

In terms of performance the USB ports on the front allow us to use our latest USB 3.0 high speed devices, the airflow is significant (and can be changed on the fan controller) and noise levels low.

Really a quite exceptional case for the asking price and one which is easily a winner of our gold award.

Approved Award at Vortez Hardware

Gold Award at Vortez Hardware

Vortez Hardware : 11-21-2011

Well, it’s hard to pick fault with Trooper because it has just about every feature you could want, has all the space and provides great build quality. All this means that the case even without any components inside is just shy of 14KG. With kit inside its going to weight approximately 18KG.

Priced at £139.99 inc. VAT (GBP) the Trooper is poised to take on Antec’s DF-85, BitFenix Colossus, Corsair’s 650D and 600T and even Cooler Master’s HAF-X. Some stiff competition indeed, and many of these cases offer individual features and characteristics. Trooper should be at the top of the pick though.

The bottom line is Trooper breaks all the boundaries in terms of what a case can offer both enthusiast and gamer. It will accommodate just about everyone’s needs in terms of options and styling. A top of the pick full-tower gaming chassis.

Approved Award at Bit-Tech

Bit-Tech : 11-18-2011

There's a lot to like about the CM Storm Trooper, and it’s good to see CM Storm really giving it a go in the case market. It’s got plenty of useful features, such as its carry handle, fan controller and hidden storage box, and it looked distinctive enough to draw comments from passers by in the Dennis offices.

Our one niggle is the default perpendicular configuration of the front 120mm fans and the complex procedure for rotating them into a more traditional parallel arrangement. This is a relatively minor hangup, however, as any bit-tech reader worth his or her salt shouldn’t baulk at the idea of getting involved in customising their build a little. As a result, if you like the styling, and the LAN party-focused features speak to you, then the Trooper comes with our hearty recommendation.

Must Have Award at Kitguru

Kitguru : 11-08-2011

I think the appearance of the Cooler Master Storm Trooper Case will split opinion. Like Marmite, people will either love or hate the looks.

It isn’t very often I remove a case from the box and spend a few minutes analysing the design. The top section of this case is a fantastic showcase of engineering prowess and it is like nothing I have ever seen before. It looks almost like HR Giger had input in the design phase, mirroring the outer shell of an alien carcass.

On a technical level, the Cooler Master Storm Trooper is clever enough to ensure a high end system build is easy to undertake. It isn’t perfect, because I am so used to the Lian Li lever locking system on the expansion slots that I cringe when I see screws now. The use of steel and plastics may keep down costs, but when compared against an aluminum construction it weighs a ton and immediately loses some sex appeal.
In regards to dealing with high end components, this case has ample cooling proficiency, ensuring SLI and Crossfire systems would perform very well. With the vast space inside and the ability to cope with huge graphics cards the high end audience will warm to the Storm Trooper immediately. It can also house the largest motherboards on the market, as well as multiple radiators and a vast array of 5.25 inch and 3.5 inch drives.

Construction is first class and there are no sharp edges and unfinished or marred surfaces, it also feels strong enough to last a very long time and we have no concerns with any of the plastic surfaces being easily susceptible to damage. The inclusion of a carrying handle is inspired, however with the final weight after a system build it won’t be the easiest chassis to carry around. I would love to see one of these chassis constructed from high quality aluminum.

Pricing in the United Kingdom is very competitive, with OCUK stocking them for £139.99 inc vat. With many Lian Li cases being sold for upwards of £300 we can see how the use of steel and plastic can lower the cost to the consumer.

Cooler Master has been able to out a long list of esteemed cases over the past few years from that legendary Cosmos (which will get an update soon as well) to the gamer oriented HAF and Storm series. Each and every time they hit the nail on its head as CM designs cases that appeal to gamers and enthusiasts, this audience. The CM Storm Trooper is an excellent combination of features, requirements, looks and offers decent value. We can wholeheartedly recommend it.
